This is a bit of a cheeky comment but I wonder what the graphs would look like with a logarithmic scale? It’s difficult to see any separation between the countries for the first couple of decades and a log scale might show the starting points a little easier. Either way, fascinating analysis that I hadn’t ever thought about before.
Good question! I think they might have looked better that way, but would have taken a lot longer to create than I was willing to spend on an idle question. :-)
Having now looked at one of them like that, you tend to see a bit more bumpiness in the early parts which the linear scale smooths out (i.e. the same sort of bumpiness you see clearly in the later sections), but the overall pattern is the same.
